PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Doug Ducey has signed legislation that will make it harder for prosecutors to seize cash and property from those suspected of a crime.

Ducey signed the legislation opposed by state prosecutors Wednesday. The governor said in a written statement the legislation will allow law enforcement to take action against criminal enterprises while ensuring citizens do not have their property seized without due process.

Advocates of House Bill 2477 say it will reform a law that has allowed police agencies to abuse the system meant to seize assets from criminal organizations.

Opponents say the legislation will cause logistical issues. They also criticize the bill’s changes to standards of proof needed to seize assets linked to crimes.
