MESA, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy shot a domestic violence suspect in the leg when he tried to escape from a patrol car.

The Tri-City Herald reports 32-year-old Michael Long, of Richland, is being treated at a local hospital after Tuesday night’s shooting.

The deputy, Scott Wright, wasn’t injured. He was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by a unit that includes many law enforcement agencies.

The sheriff’s office says deputies arrested Long on investigation of domestic violence crimes and other charges Tuesday night.

Long was handcuffed and put in the back of the patrol car. Authorities said he tried to climb into the front seat. The deputy tried to stop from driving off. During the confrontation, the deputy shot the suspect in the leg.
