  • Whitetail Wednesday: Can You Guess the Age of This Buck?

Posted 2016-12-28 01:38:18 by: Johnny Gearfire

Estimating the age of bucks during winter can be difficult.  This is primarily because they commonly lose 25 percent or more of their body weight during the rut. Bucks tend to burn more calories than they consume this time of year. This is a huge loss in weight, and one of the results is a change in their body shape. A buck’s shape (how one part relates to another) is often used to estimate their age. For example, mature bucks often have very well developed shoulders and hams, and their back and bellies sag. Some of those shapes change if a buck loses a fourth of his weight. A friend...Read more ...

  • Shooting with the Mann: Gun Camp for Kids

Posted 2016-12-26 12:15:38 by: Johnny Gearfire

There’s a lot of conversation about kids and guns nowadays. It didn’t used to be like that. When I was in junior high, the hunter safety program was part of my physical education class. We shot shotguns on the baseball field, loaded shotgun ammunition, and shot air rifles in the gym. Never did anyone worry about a mass shooting at our school, and when I got into high school, we left our guns in our cars so we could hunt as soon as class let out. Here’s the thing: When I was growing up, kids learned about guns. They learned the dangers associated with firearms, they learned firearms...Read more ...

  • My Favorite Christmas Card of 2016

Posted 2016-12-25 12:15:56 by: Johnny Gearfire

Like you, I enjoy receiving Christmas cards. It’s a great way to reconnect with people  . . . especially friends and family who you don’t get to see as often as you’d like. While going through my snail mail recently, I came across a white envelope with no return address. Without any idea who might have sent it (I didn’t take the time to examine the black postmark stamped on the envelope), I simply tore it open. As the photo above shows, the card inside featured a beautiful winter scene with a yellow Lab puppy sitting on a bench. In the background, I spotted two whitetails and a...Read more ...

  • Must-See Video: Santa Claus and Silencers Go Together Like Milk and Cookies

Posted 2016-12-23 12:00:38 by: Johnny Gearfire

How does Santa deal with the stress of Christmas season? By shooting guns, of course! SilencerCo has been on the nice list since 2008, when the company first started. Because they've kept their record squeaky clean, they pulled some strings and managed to get an interview with the big man himself! Santa proclaims his support for suppressors, and even has a wish of his own this year: To have suppressors removed from the NFA. If that were to happen, you can bet old Saint Nic's sack will be filled with shiny new silencers next Christmas. This video is hilarious, but shows a side of...Read more ...

  • Video: Coyote Peterson Takes the Sting of a Bullet Ant

Posted 2016-12-22 18:30:28 by: Johnny Gearfire

Coyote Peterson is one brave guy. He's developing a pretty prominent following by testing the pain scale of the worst insect stings in the world. That's right, he voluntarily induces stings from insects that are known to have the most painful stings on the planet. He's messed with the cow killer, danced with a tarantula hawk, and in his latest "Sting Zone" video, he takes on the bullet ant. This little insect is said to have the most painful sting in the insect kingdom, and Coyote Peterson is like a little kid on Christmas morning when he finds this thing. • NRA Shooting Series: How to Sight-In a Scope

Posted 2016-12-22 17:04:04 by: Johnny Gearfire

Fact: There are some proven ways to zero your scope in only one shot. Those methods will get you close, but you won’t attain the full accuracy potential of your rifle. Why? Every rifle and ammo combination has a little bit of imprecision. No matter how carefully you perform a series of shots, you’ll always see a grouping of bullet holes downrange. For example, using an AR-type rifle and a 100-yard target, you may see a group of shots measuring 2 inches in diameter, give or take. If you choose one single hole as your basis for zeroing the scope, you could end up with a rifle/scope/ammo...Read more ...
